Our Analysis and Test Results
The Quip Smart earned high marks for its sleek and minimalist design. It's available in several colorways, which our testers found quite appealing. We also like the ability to mount the included toothbrush holder on our mirror. This small addition added a lot of value and cuts back on bathroom clutter. While lacking a guided brushing integration, we did find it cleaned decently and was easy to use.
Performance Comparison
Cleaning
Cleaning accounts for 40% of the overall score. We use plaque disclosing tablets after not brushing for 16 hours.
The Quip Smart did a moderate job of cleaning our teeth. The bristles were comfortable, and we appreciated the quadrant timer, which subtly buzzed every 30 seconds to indicate we should change to a new mouth section.
That said, at the two-minute mark, there was still a fair amount of pink residue remaining. With a slightly longer time, we would've had a great outcome.
Comfort
The Quip Smart earned above-average comfort ratings. It has a medium-sized head and comfortably soft bristles. At first, we were concerned about the rubbery outer bristles, but we found them very pleasant and created no unwanted aggravation.
The Quip Smart looks a lot like a manual brush. It weighs in at 1.5 ounces and is very slim. Early risers who don't want to wake their family will also appreciate that this brush is extremely quiet. In fact, it was noticeably one of the quietest brushes we've ever tested.
Ease of Use
The Quip Smart was among the easiest electric toothbrushes we've ever used. It has just one mode and one button. The button is responsive and easy to manipulate.
While there is no high-tech brushing guidance in the app, we did like the included quadrant timer. The brush vibrates every 30 seconds to nudge you to move on to another part of your mouth. A long pulse comes at the two minute mark and then then brush turns off.
Since the unit is so sleek, it's very easy to clean. It hardly gets any build up stuck to it and can be wiped down in a flash. We did find a weird, slick fluid built up in the batter chamber. It did not affect the brush head or performance, but was an unpleasant and strange occurrence.
The Quip Smart travel case is among the simplest we've tested, and yet it's also one of the most versatile. It can cover the brush head while traveling, and you can mount it to your mirror for easy storage or as a stand on your counter. The only downside is that it does not have any storage for extra brush heads.
Battery Life
Every brush we tested was run for two minutes twice a day in order to test the battery life. The Quip Smart lasted for an impressive 170 days. It comes with a magnetic USB-A charging cord, which is pleasantly easy to attach when a charge is needed. We also like that it's not a full docking station, which can take up precious bathroom space.
There is no battery indicator, which could be annoying. The unit simply starts slowing down and working more sporadically. Given the long battery life, though, we don't find this to be a major sticking point.
Should You Buy the Quip Smart?
The Quip Smart is a smart option for anyone looking for a simple and sleek toothbrush. It looks great and performs very well. Its vibrations are very mild and the battery life is unmatched.
What Other Electric Toothbrush Should You Consider?
If you're looking for a brush that is a bit cheaper and cleans quick and effectively, you should consider the Philips Sonicare 4100. Or, for a cheaper brush that includes an app with brushing guidance and rewards, take a look at the Hum by Colgate Battery Powered.
